American author John Steinbeck once wrote that Italy’s Amalfi Coast “is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” He’s right. It’s one of those rare places where photographs simply don’t do the sights justice – you need to see them for yourself. A great way to start is the Torre dello Ziro high above the village of Amalfi. But this is not a walk for the faint-hearted (there are over 500 steps) though you’ll think each one is worth it when you reach the top and see the view. To your left is Ravello, with the sumptuous Villa Cimbrone and it’s gardens standing majestic on the promontory; below, Atrani beach, decorated with colourful umbrellas beside a bright blue sea; and down to your right, the pretty jumble of Amalfi’s terracotta rooftops, squeezed into the valley under terraces thick with lemon trees. You do have to pinch yourself that it’s real. But be sure to start with a cafe e cornetto at xx to power you up the hill!
